What You're Saying

What DESIGN FAD
do you wish would FADE

AWAY?

Steampunk Steamrolled
TYLER NEILL, IIDA,
interior designer,
FH Design, Nashville,
Tennessee, USA

Excerpt: "I would like to see the trend of steampunk fade away in hotel
design. It has become so mainstream and oversaturated at this point that
it has lost its sense of treasure when used subtly in design. I am finding
that the elements of exposed brick and the beat-up décor are overused
and not [used] tactfully in order to highlight areas of a space. Instead,
it would be better to designate these elements to fewer areas for higher
impact. Continuing to edit and refine the use of those elements will
create a much larger statement for the space. Less is truly more."

The Penchant for Pendants
CHRISTINA MORGAN,
director, interior design,
and head of the
education sector, Pallavi
Dean Interiors, Dubai,
United Arab Emirates

Excerpt: "My pet peeve interior trend is feature lighting with bare
bulbs. Pinterest has a saturation of interior images framing Edisoninspired pendants in shot. Though the exposed LED filament is
wonderfully raw and nostalgic, this bare light source is best suited to
home interiors and urban eateries-not the breakout spaces of our
commercial interiors. Office and school breakout spaces should have
comfortable indirect light that provides a respite from the glare of
the computer screen, is easy on the eye, and is an overall source of
calming light."

The Container Craze
SERGIO MONDRAGON, IIDA,
CID, LEED AP, NCIDQ,
associate interior designer,
Gensler, San Francisco,
California, USA

Excerpt: "Being a designer in the [San Francisco area], you get
accustomed to seeing a lot of shipping containers. They are used
indoors for office settings or turned into coffee shops in the hospitality
market. They are normally paired along with Edison bulbs and loud
metal furniture. It's cool, but this whole shipping container trend
needs to fade away and be replaced with something more humanistic
and comfortable."

Hexagon Anything
KRISTYN HILL, IIDA, LEED,
NCIDQ,
interior designer,
Bergmeyer,
Boston, Massachusetts, USA

iida.org/perspective

Excerpt: "I think the hexagon pattern in both wall and floor tile
exploded in popularity because it is a fun, modular shape that allows
for designers to experiment with graphic patterns and color in their
designs. I'd like to see flooring and wall tile manufacturers push their
modular shapes even further."
