In 1958, Italian luxury boat designer
and builder Carlo Riva created a
special model of his famous Tritone
yacht for Prince Rainier III of
Monaco and Princess Grace Kelly.
Riva's yachts were made out of
sumptuous, lacquered mahogany
that glimmered in the sun. AvroKO
let that influence the dining room
at Somerset Club. "The flooring
and the tables use several tones of
wood with thick off-white grout,
taking inspiration from the sundeck
of the 1958 Riva Tritone," Farmerie
says. But in keeping with the overall
objective of creating a grand but
comfortable space, AvroKO didn't
replicate the reddish-wood finish
of the 1958 Tritone to exacting
standards. The visible grout and the
crisscrossed pattern of the wood
planks more closely references the
boats docked in Chicago's Lake
Michigan harbors.
CLEAR VIEWS
Somerset is located in a building that
housed the Cedar Hotel in the 1920s. In
tribute to the historic hotel, AvroKO
incorporated elements of the original
1924 facade, such as the neon Cedar
Hotel sign. To ensure this element of
the old building is visible throughout the
bar and dining room, AvroKO partnered
with architects from Goettsch Partners
to build the booths low to the ground
and bordered by installed panes of glass.
That unobstructed line of sight was
the impetus for several design choices.
For example, a curved glass-and-brass
screen-a reference to the windshields
on vintage leisure boats-sits low
behind the banquette and keeps the
space open. The room has "a series of
dramatic views and vantage points and
generally celebrates the over-the-top
nature of the country club concept,"
Farmerie says.
THE RIGHT
SHADE OF BLUE
The 1958 Tritone, as well as the
1960s-era boats that followed,
had seats upholstered in a striking
aquamarine blue. The color was en
vogue at the time and matched the
ambiance of the French Riviera, but
AvroKO thought it felt too loud for
Chicago. "So we borrowed the color
from the Riva Aquariva [yachts]
being produced in the 1970s for the
banquette and wall colors," Farmerie
says. This slightly more academic blue
still suggests the influence of water but
steers the design away from kitsch.
