EDITOR’S LETTER The Authority on Meetings & Incentives Shift Happens here were some great speakers at the Professional Convention Management Association’s (PCMA) annual meeting last month in Dallas, but then PCMA always does a terrific job when it comes to putting together great educational programs. And I’m not talking about the keynoters, though it is hard to go wrong with speakers like Nancy Brinker, the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the worldwide organization supporting breast cancer research, and Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers: The Story of Success. But many of the session speakers were well worth the trip as well. My favorite was futurist David Houle, who spoke at the end of the first day. It was an unfortunate time slot as the room was less than one-quarter full, but those of us who were fortunate enough to have chosen the session were the beneficiaries of a fascinating discussion of the “shift age,” which Houle defines as the era we are now moving into as we leave the information age. I can’t do justice to the topic in this short space, but in brief, the three forces of the shift age are: The flow of economic, cultural, and political issues from a national to a global focus; the declining influence of institutions and the increasing impact of individuals; and the acceleration of connectedness through electronic media. That’s the bare bones of it. For a meatier version, visit www.davidhoule.com. He has a great message that can help any businessperson struggling to get a handle on all the change we’re inundated with to more clearly understand what direction to go in next. And while we’re on the subject of connectedness, Successful Meetings and MeetingNews, along with sister publication Business Travel News, have started a social networking site called Planners Connect. The site will offer meeting planners the opportunity to attend webinars, network, gather and disseminate news pertinent to the planning of meetings, find or become a mentor, post links to whitepapers and research, and form special interest groups. It’s one of the many shifts happening right now, which none of us can afford to ignore. Membership is free. To join, visit www.plannersconnect.com.
