During that week the Orlando CVB hosted a meetings and convention industry roundtable that included top executives from the hospitality and meetings industries. Here’s what they had to say about some key issues facing the meetings industry. V i n c e n t A l o n z o : The meetings industry was on The other thing that we are seeing as a new trend is the incorporation of virtual meetings into an organization’s meetings mix. S h e rr if Ka ra m at: There is some stabilizing going on. Clearly, some sectors are affected more than others. I believe that meeting planners are looking for partners that are relevant. Those suppliers that are providing value are the ones who will stay in the game. G a r y S a i n : CVBs have never really been involved with helping to market or brand an event, or build attendance, but a lot of meeting planners are asking us to use the marketing expertise we use to promote the leisure side of our destination to help them make sure their attendance meets or exceeds previous years. Dave Scy p i n s k i : The economy has stopped hemorrhaging. However, it is still slow. A lot of associations right now are laying off Sherrif Karamat COO, Professional Convention Management Assoc. quite a rollercoaster ride in the first half of 2009. Where do things stand now? Christine Duffy: We have gotten to the point where we are not seeing more programs canceled, and we are actually seeing bookings coming back for 2010—even some that had canceled programs that would have operated in the fall of 2009 are reconsidering. So I think that’s good news.
