County commissioners have recommended the Mall site for the project, which would include reusing two existing structures—the public auditorium and current convention center. A site selection committee previously recommended a different location for the MMCC—the Tower City area—but development at the Mall site is expected to be significantly less expensive. The Mall, originally designed in 1903 by architect and city planner Daniel Burnham and associates, is an example of early-20th-century “City Beautiful” plans.
