PARIS > LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION —PARIS Lights, Camera, Action—Paris THE CITY OF LIGHT OFFERS GREAT CINEMA VENUES FOR OFFSITE EVENTS N o one loves the moving image more than the French. And the love affair goes back to the beginnings of the film industry. Many of the firsts connected to the development of recording and projecting film occurred in France. The first cameraprojector was patented in France in 1888 and the first public exhibition of moving images took place two years later at the Paris Opera in 1890. That first exhibition in the luxurious Opera House set the tone for Paris movie theaters—or cinemas, as the French call them. The capital’s beautiful cinemas are still an integral part of daily life for Parisians but can also be used to host special events. Here are some of the more noteworthy options. Built in 1932, not far from the Galeries Lafayette and the Musee Grevin, the Grand Rex is the largest cinema in Europe. Its huge auditorium can host 2,650 people on three levels. Listed as a historic building for its Moorish-style interior decoration and its famous starry vaults, the Rex is ideal for private screenings, cocktail receptions, or corporate events. The MK2 chain of cinemas, with many houses in the capital, also hosts events, notably at the MK2 Bibliotheque (14 auditoriums, with from 85 to 584 chairs), in the 13th arrondissement (neighborhood), and the MK2 Quai de Seine-Quai de Loire (12 auditoriums, from 70 to 354 chairs), by the La Villette canal basin. The latter offers spacious auditoriums for all types of screenings. With five cinema auditoriums ranging from 30 to 444 seats, a rotunda meeting room designed by the architect JeanMichel Wilmotte, and numerous reception In Paris, it’s possible to make going to the movies an event I SM I November 2009 I SuccessfulMeetings.com
