34TH NSBE ANNUAL NATIONAL CONVENTION PREVIEW ORLANDO, FLA., MARCH 19–23, 2008 “IGNITING THE TORCH: ENGINEERING IN ACTION” Greetings NSBE Family, I am excited to have this opportunity to invite you to the National Society of Black Engineers’ 34th Annual National Convention, which will be held March 19–23, 2008 in Orlando Fla., at the Orange County Convention Center. Looking at the themes of the past, it is clear that we’ve sufﬁciently empowered ourselves to believe and understand that we can become engineers. We know how to empower, encourage and motivate ourselves. We understand the message: “Get your degree!” Then what? How do you make a striking impact on Society? When do you do that? The Annual National Convention should be a call to action, and it has to start with the theme. This year’s theme, “Igniting the Torch: Engineering in Action,” was inspired by the limitless opportunities we now have to make change, as students, professionals and active members of the community. Myriad exciting activities are in progress to positively impact our world come late March. Orlando deﬁnitely provides the friendly atmosphere and family environment needed to host our convention. So we have provided opportunities for you to enjoy time with your friends and family at select theme parks, outside of the conference time. The Golden Torch Awards will again be combined with the Closing Extravaganza, becoming the premier event to showcase the talents of African Americans in engineering. In essence, this event will be a membership-intensive, decidedly technical, globally sensitive convention for the National Society of Black Engineers, and the best Annual National Convention ever! Our goal is to have 15,000 members in attendance. I hope you will be one of them, enjoying the heart of Southern hospitality within the Mighty Region III. I look forward to seeing you in Orlando.
