Each year, technical competitions provide much of the excitement at NSBE’s biggest event. Here in Las Vegas, you can see the culmination of regional efforts to give students exposure to the world of engineering, technology, research and design. take a look at the competitions scheduled for the 35th NSBE Annual National Convention, and make sure you drop by to glimpse some of the nation’s best technical and engineering challenges. TECHNICaL PaPEr ComPETITIoN The Technical Paper Competition is designed to enhance graduate students’ and technical professionals’ skills in technical writing and theoretical research. Abstracts and research papers will be submitted, and six national finalists will be chosen by a panel of academicians to present their research during this national competition and showcase. The event provides an opportunity for graduate students to present their research findings while encouraging undergraduates to pursue graduate degrees. The TECH Symposium Poster Exhibit — part of the Graduate School Fair — provides an opportunity for all graduate students to present their research. Convention Center, Room S224, Thursday, March 26, 1:00 PM–4:30 PM NaTIoNaL BUSINESS PLaN ComPETITIoN This event’s goal is to develop the business plan-writing techniques of NSBE members interested in becoming entrepreneurs. It is the training ground for the business plan approval process. Business web development will be ascertained with the help of the Microsoft Software Grant. The competition will send NSBEpreneurs into the engineering/STEM market fully prepared to start up their businesses. USA Quiz Bowl: Flamingo, El Dorado Ballroom, Friday, March 27, 2:30 PM–5:00 PM World Quiz Bowl: Flamingo, El Dorado Ballroom, Saturday, March 28, 11:00 AM– 3:45 PM INTEGraTED DESIGN ComPETITIoN: DESIGN SqUaD – aS BUILT oN Tv! Presented by WGBH-PBS Boston / Sponsored by ASCE and Intel Corporation This Pre-College Initiative Conference workshop, presented by the producers of the PBS television show Design Squad, has everything needed to unleash students’ ingenuity and start them thinking like engineers. The challenge: Build a machine that kicks a ping-pong ball into a cup lying on its side at least 12 inches away.
