arrived on the island near the end of June and met with students in RISE–St. Lucia, a community organization led by Stephen King, M.D., a forensic pathologist who seeks higher education for all St. Lucian youth. Mack spoke before numerous groups during his visit — including Prime Minister Stephenson King (no relation to Dr. King) and his cabinet — and was a big hit in the St. Lucian media. IIT entered the equation after Mack returned to the States in early July. After getting a go-ahead from NSBE’s National Executive Board, Mack talked with an official of the university who mentioned that the Chicago-based school was also looking to diversify its student population. Three days later, Gerald Doyle, IIT’s vice provost of Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid, called Mack with an offer of 75 partial scholarships for St. Lucians who could get to the school for the fall 2010 semester — one year earlier than NSBE had planned. “Pipeline development is one of our areas of focus this year, and it’s not just about getting young students interested in engineering,” says NSBE National Chair Phelps, 23, a master’s degree student in mechanical engineering at Cornell University. “It’s about building a pipeline from the island of St. Lucia to potentially create those future engineers and technologists who can build the economy and grow that nation.”

News of an immediate scholarship opportunity went viral throughout the Caribbean. “The National Society of Black Engineers, NSBE, has become a household name in Saint Lucia,” said The Voice, the island’s largest newspaper, on July 13. Mack enlisted Dr. Stephen King’s help to find students who had already graduated from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. “We got 250 applications in one day,” says Mack. In his homeland, the value of education is extremely high, explains Dr. King. “We have two Nobel laureates from Saint Lucia,” he says. “One of them, Sir Arthur Lewis, is a Nobel laureate in economics. He says the fundamental cure for poverty is not money but knowledge. You know, these St. Lucian youth genuinely believe that. It is true, and now they’re living that truth.” Doyle, who has created other scholarship programs for IIT, went to visit the nation for himself, as did National Chair Phelps and NSBE National Parliamentarian Tasha Zephirin. “We are committed to doing the right thing, to taking a very long view in terms of the world and our commitment,” says Doyle. “Our mission is to do science and technology and engineering to drive change.
