Regional leadership Conference Recaps
addressed the conference at Closing Session. “RLC was a great experience for my board,” said Joshua Situka, who is serving his second term as president of the University of Houston Chapter. “(They) came away motivated and confident that they had the tools they needed for a successful year.” Region V gives a special thank-you to all of its sponsors and supporters: Spirit Airlines, Inc., Cessna, Wichita State University, Burns & McDonnell, The Boeing Company and the National Institute for Aviation Research. The conference was truly a success and inspired the P.A.S.S.I.O.N. within each attendee.

Region Vi
This year’s Region VI Leadership Conference was held in sunny San Diego, Calif. As expected, the region came in huge numbers and “shut it down.” The event gave members a chance to see many black engineering leaders from across the West Coast. This conference had it all: workshops by San Diego Gas & Electric and Region VI Regional Executive Board members, group networking tips for linking up chapters, and information that gave attendees a better sense of self and a look at the history of NSBE as a whole. By the end of it all, there was not a single attendee who did not stand up in front of a group and contribute his or her ideas about what NSBE should be and how it can grow. Many of this year’s attendees said this year’s Regional Leadership Conference was the best they’d experienced. The conference organizers were able to establish a level of “Six Unity” and loving camaraderie that hadn’t been demonstrated at past RLCs. With that in mind, Region VI leaders planned to use the experiences from RLC as a platform for a successful Fall Regional Conference. A message from one conference attendee was worth taking home by all: “Not only can we do what’s expected by getting good grades, graduating from college and acquiring a job. We can rise together as leaders in our communities and be role models to the children that are to come after us.” ■

Region V
The Region V Regional Leadership Conference was held in Wichita, Kansas, this year, on the campus of Wichita State University. The RLC hosted 87 attendees, including Pre-College Initiative students and collegiate and Alumni members. Many universities from Texas, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana were well-represented at the conference. In addition, several new Pre-College Initiative students from the local area attended and left with plans to establish a NSBE Jr. chapter with the Wichita State University and Wichita City Alumni Chapters. Members were able to engage in hands-on workshops and functional training sessions that included “Networking 101,” “Dealing with Difficult Individuals” and “Teamwork Skills.” NSBE

Jr. students also got the opportunity to tour the National Institute for Aviation Research. Conference highlights included Opening Session speaker Larry Randle Jr. from Cessna Aircraft Company; Friday’s Ice Breaker, which was designed to create new regional chants; functional training for the NSBE Jr. students on the Regional Jr. Executive Board; and Billy Frank from Caterpillar, Inc., who

“i had a good experience at this year’s (region iv) regional Conference in Terre Haute, ind. One of my favorite parts about it was meeting e-board members from other chapters and the sharing of good practices. There are so many things that can be learned from the trials and errors of other chapters, and i came back with a plethora of new ideas. At rLC, we were also able to delve deeper into what NSBE was about and the plans for the upcoming year (both regionally and nationally). Overall, it was a great weekend. i learned loads and had lots of fun.” — Rachel Winegardner, marquette university Chapter treasurer
