redefining career advancement

O
ne of the biggest draws of NSBE’s Annual Convention is the Career Fair, which is one of the largest events of its kind for engineers. And as we also advertise, the Annual Convention is one of the largest gatherings of African-American engineers, scientists, technologists, mathematicians and others who support NSBE’s mission. The conversations I often hear at the Career Fair and other NSBE convention events, such as the Hospitality Suites, Career Engineer Networking Suites, Corporate Roundtables, workshops and luncheons, often revolve around career opportunities or trying to fill a position. Conversations I don’t hear often enough are those that discuss what we do for a living, what skills we have acquired and, more important, the technical issues or technical questions that we need answered. I believe that “leveraging partnerships” goes beyond establishing mutually beneficial relationships between NSBE and our sponsors. The concept of leveraging partnerships also includes creating a knowledge base that everyone can use to learn more about what they don’t know. The Annual Convention and other NSBE events are great places to meet people who have skills and information that can expand our knowledge. In our careers, we all encounter problems that require us to seek out others for the answers. When no one in the office can help, rather than hiring a consultant, your next step should be to look through your contacts. Somewhere in your personal network you may find someone who has the answer and does not mind taking time out of a busy day to talk to you. But how do you create such a network? When you meet new people, find out their areas of expertise and let them know yours. Let people know what you are working on — not just in your day-to-day but also in the “grand scheme.” Tell them how your job fits into the big picture. The objective of most businesses is to make money and provide a service or manufacture goods while controlling costs at all times. When you can tap into your network to answer a

question, you save both time and money, and you also learn something that you can add to your “toolbox”: the expertise you have developed that includes knowledge you have picked up along the way. So, when you network, I challenge you to think beyond career advancement and seek new knowledge from you new relationships. Consider making your next NSBE event a venue for higher education. ■
