NsBE NEWS t NSBE Makes StEM Education pledge to the Clinton Global Initiative he National Society of Black Engineers has made a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative to put 100,000 underrepresented minority children into the pipeline to engineering careers, over the next five years. NSBE Executive Director Carl B. Mack presented the pledge at the first CGI America, an event held last June in Chicago, Ill., to address jobs, education, innovation and the nation’s economic recovery. Each participant in the event — which brought together 600 businesses, foundations, nongovernmental organizations and government leaders — made a “Commitment to Action: a new, specific, and measurable plan that addresses a challenge facing the United States.” Among the cosigners on NSBE’s pledge are Ron Hewitt of the U.S. Coast Guard; Matthew Miller, director of the SAE Foundation and Pre-Professional Programs; Anthony Junior of the Office of Naval Research; Scott Drury of San Diego Gas and Electric and Sean Milloy of Cummins Inc. The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was established in 2005 by former President Bill Clinton to convene global leaders to “create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.” “The National Society of Black Engineers will send 100,000 urban minority kids to engineering camps over the next five years. Now that’s a big deal,” Clinton told the attendees at CGI America’s closing session. “…If the participation rates in science, math, engineering and technology for African Americans, Hispanics and women…were equal to that of males of European, Asian and Middle Eastern descent in our country, there would be no shortage of scientists and engineers in the next decade in the United States.” NSBE’s commitment to CGI is aligned with the longstanding goals of NSBE’s Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program. SEEK teaches basics of engineering and science to pre-college students through hands-on engineering projects, team competitions and the guidance of “SEEK mentors,” collegiate members of NSBE from across the country. ■ CNA is a not-for-profit company that serves the public interest by providing in-depth analysis and results-oriented solutions to help government leaders choose the best course of action in setting policy and managing operations.
