Patton iv, P.e., national ae cHair emeritus F rom October 4–6, 2012, NSBE Alumni Extension hosted its first national Professional Development Conference (PDC) in Dallas, Texas. Nearly 200 professionals from across the country gathered for three days of interactive professional development training, powerful networking and career advancement opportunities, and a dynamic series of speakers on the topic of leadership. The various networking events gave attendees multiple opportunities to establish connections with other technical professionals and employer representatives. Among those events were the “Mentoring from the C-Suite” sessions, in which participants engaged in meaningful conversations with groups of senior corporate executives. A wide range of conference workshops also provided extraordinary opportunities for attendees to grow their technical and leadership skills, in a relaxed atmosphere designed to foster good conversation and impromptu meetings between the workshop presenters and participants. One highlight of the conference was the Career Branding workshop, facilitated by Stedman Graham, who outlined the nine steps one should take to move his or her career forward. One www.nsbe.org of Graham’s main talking points was that, “You must go deep in your development to build your brand. And this is done by doing what you love.” The success of the 2012 PDC came largely from the efforts of many volunteers and the members of the PDC Committee: NSBE Alumni Extension members DeWayne Allen, Arlana Brooks, Eric Bryant, LeAnne Dolce, Nosa Egharevba, Julius Hudson, Amber Smith, Keith Sylvester and Leon Williams; NSBE World Headquarters staff members Alexis Dickerson and Kenjie Davis, and Leslie Mitchell and Tonia Kirkendoll of Rutherford & Associates. I implore you, as NSBE professionals, to keep the momentum of “Succeeding Professionally” at its full velocity, as we continue on the road to the 2013 Technical Professionals Conference (TPC). The TPC will be held March 27–31, 2013 in Indianapolis, Ind., as part of NSBE’s 39th Annual Convention.
