C

hristopher Jones, Ph.D., has achieved great career success in conventional settings, but that
doesn't mean he's easy to fit into a box. Ask him a question expecting to get the standard answer, and he's likely to analyze it, like the engineer he is, and give an unexpected, unorthodox,
thought-provoking response.

For example: recently retired from Northrop Grumman
Corporation after serving the last seven of his 15 years with the
company as corporate vice president and as president of the
Technology Services Sector, he definitely won't be writing a book
about how to succeed in Corporate America. In fact, he doesn't
really like the phrase. He doesn't see "Corporate America" as essentially different from anywhere else.
"Corporate America is a broad, kind of overused expression,"
he says. "We use it, but what is it? I just consider them large organizations. They could be military or state or local government.
It's really more a question of organization of leadership. And the
military and government have the same fundamental challenges
industry does. And the solutions aren't that different. You have to
tweak them, but they're not fundamentally different."
Dr. Jones earned his exceptional work ethic honestly, growing
up with four older siblings and a younger one, in Havre de Grace,
Maryland, which was a racially integrated town of about 8,000
during that time. His mother was a teacher and his father worked

in a Firestone Tire plant in the town, where military service was
common and education beyond a high school diploma was a
rarity.
He decided on a career in engineering "late," he says, during
his senior year of high school. And although his love of aerospace
came early, he says he wasn't the kid who wanted to become a
fighter pilot. A longtime lover of STEM, and technical challenges,
he is, nonetheless, widely admired now for his people skills. As
a senior corporate executive, he chose to spend a far more than
average amount of time making site visits alone across the country
and interacting with customers and with employees within all
levels of the organization - from new college hires to new managers - and interacted with them all the same way, regardless of
experience.
Dr. Jones has four academic degrees, including a Bachelor of
Science in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of
Technology (Class of 1986) and Master of Science degrees in
aerospace engineering and engineering management from the
