The Revolution
New York has always played an
important role in our nation’s history
and development, dating back to early
exploration, colonial times and the
struggle for independence.
U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY
AT WEST POINT
On May 10, 1775, one of the first aggressive actions of the American Revolution
took place at Fort Ticonderoga as Ethan
Allen, Benedict Arnold and 83 “Green
Mountain Boys” surprised the sleeping
British garrison and took the “Key
to a Continent” without firing a shot.
Today, you can follow the Path Through
History to the fort, which stands as a
monument to those who gave their lives
for freedom. Home to one of America’s
largest collections of eighteenth-century
military artifacts, it is also the site of
a yearly reenactment that brings more
than 400 participants together to
recreate its pivotal role in the early
years of the war.
Two major Revolutionary War battles
were fought in Stillwater, near Saratoga.
The second one, the Battle of Saratoga,
resulted in a great American victory
and is considered by historians to be
the turning point of the war. Today
these battles are commemorated at the
Saratoga National Battlefield, part of
Saratoga National Historical Park and
the Path Through History.
In 1777, one year after the Declaration
of Independence, the New York State
Senate convened its first session in
Kingston, in an old limestone home
built in 1676. In October 1777, after
meeting in the house for only a month,
the Senate and the rest of the newly
formed State government hastily fled
Kingston when a British force was sent
north from New York City. The Senate
House has been restored and today is
furnished in the style of a residence of
the Revolutionary War Period.
