The Power
of Plus
Size inclusivity is a beautiful thing-for these outdoor adventurers who
want the same styles and technologies as everyone else and for outdoor

movement, apparel size inclusivity is gaining
momentum. Once agnostic to the needs of
plus-size customers, outdoor brands have finally caught on-for good reason: The plussize women's apparel market is projected to
grow to $24 billion by 2020. Adventurers
of size want to purchase the same apparel
everyone else is wearing, field test the same
fabric technologies their peers rave about, and
choose from the same fun, funky color options
as their straight-sized counterparts.
As we continue to shift our thinking about

who "belongs" outside, this photo shoot gave
Outdoor Retailer magazine an opportunity
to highlight an array of body shapes and sizes
as well as a demographic that is all too often
overlooked and underserved by outdoor
brands. But the shoot almost didn't happen.
Calling in clothing options for non-samplesize models proved a major hurdle since those
sizes are so hard to find in inventory (so the
editors got a taste of the same frustrations
plus-sized customers face).
These un-retouched photographs of adventurers in their element, feeling good about
how they look while wearing clothes meant to
fit them, is a study in intentional, thoughtful
design by companies that decided to leverage
their resources and fine-tune their goods to
come up with the proper fit. The photos here
are by no means all-inclusive of all of the companies that offer extended sizes, but the hope
is that these images will foster open and honest conversations between consumers, gear
makers, and retailers about how the industry
views people of size, and what we can do as a
community to ensure that every demographic
has a seat at this table. O.R.
