THE TARIFF SHERIFFS
Hands raised like recent tariff
hikes at the end of a packedhouse panel discussion on the
Show's opening day entitled "Intelligent Supply Chain Strategies
for Navigating the U.S.-China
Trade War."
Moderated by Rich Harper of
Outdoor Industry Association
and hosted by Amie Ahanchian
and David Beale of trade consultant KPMG, the discussion
centered on tactics outdoor
businesses can employ to combat today's rising tariff costs.
While the business landscape
has scored recent victories-a
Phase 1 deal signed on Jan.
15 suspended a 15% tariff on
List 4b goods and dropped
the List 4a tariff from 15% to
7.5%-there's still bad news,
says Ahanchian. "There is still a
25% tariff on List 3 goods, the
timing of Phase 2 negotiations is
unclear, and tariffs are hard to
remove," she said. "They're going
to continue into the foreseeable
future, regardless of who wins
the next election."
"It's something we don't see stopping anytime soon," added Beale.
"The Phase 1 deal has teeth and is

in place at the moment, but it could
easily disappear."
The discussion later veered
beyond China to Brexit; the
new free trade agreement with
Japan; the U.S. Mexico Canada
Agreement (USMCA, the new
NAFTA), which was signed, coincidentally, on the opening day
of the Show; and new tariffs with
France in response to its new
Digital Services Tax. The presentation quickly became an alphabet soup of surcharges showgoers
could see on the horizon.
But hope was also offered, in
the form of developing a tariff-mitigation strategy to address
everything from supply-chain
sourcing and potential 301 exclusions to first-sale value reduction,
city-of-origin changes, and utilizing Foreign Trade Zones.
"Having a world-class compliance program and tariff-mitigation strategy is super important," said Beale, adding that
a KPMG survey revealed that
simple exclusions and country-of-origin tactics can shave
59% off tariff impacts. "Now,
are there any questions?"

RISE TO THE TOP OF THE FEED

"Content is king or queen in connecting with various audiences," said Lisa Dougherty, digital content manager for RANGE,
to a packed house of social media gurus, nonprofit reps, and
content creators at the "Social Support" panel yesterday at The
RANGER Station.
Creating high-quality content in a competitive digital field can be
tricky for nonprofits with small budgets for social media marketing.
Building symbiotic relationships with digital creatives can help nonprofits "rise to the top of the feed" and reach wider audiences.
Panelist Kate Van Waes, executive director of the American Hiking Society, said partnering with digital influencers has
brought advocacy campaigns to life. Last year, for example, it

collaborated with Teresa Baker, founder of the Outdoor CEO
Diversity Pledge, on her "Hike Like A Girl" social media campaign. The partnership benefited both parties: "[Baker] was able
to reach a broader audience, and it was good for us to reach
Teresa's followers," Van Waes said.
Partnerships online help build relationships offline and encourage real-world participation in educational or fundraising campaigns. "Fifty-five percent of people who engage with causes on
social media are more inspired to take action offline," Dougherty
said. "It's helping, and it's making an impact." -Emma Athena
