Join The Conservation Alliance for
breakfast and presentations by
three Arctic advocates with personal
stories to tell about their experience
and connection to this spectacular place. Titled "A Refuge at Risk:
Fighting for Human Rights, Climate
Justice, and Unmatched Adventure in
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,"
the presentation will be headlined
by Gwich'in Elder Lorraine Netro,
climate justice organizer and writer
Maia Wikler, and professional climber
Tommy Caldwell. Netro, from the
Vuntut Gwitch'in First Nation in Old
Crow, is an advocate for the protection and conservation of Sacred
Lands and the calving grounds of the
Porcupine Caribou Herd. Wikler is an
anthropologist, activist, and writer
whose work has appeared in Teen
Vogue and Vice. As a member of The
North Face New Explorers Arctic
Expedition, Wikler journeyed to the
Arctic Wildlife Refuge to report the
impacts of the ongoing environmental and human rights crisis. Caldwell is a father, climate activist, and
professional rock climber. In 2019,
Caldwell took a life-changing trip to
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Discover Protect Our Winters' new mission to mobilize the outdoor industry
on climate.
For the past six months, the outdoor industry's leader in environmental protection has been involved in a massive undertaking. "We've been doing qualitative
and quantitative research projects to understand people's love of outdoors and
how it pertains to the potential they have to make an impact on climate," says
Samantha Kilgore, Protect Our Winters' communications manager. "And what
we've found is that you can't just hit people over the head with climate issues-
it feels too political and polarizing."
Instead, the organization is trying to show individuals that the very things
that define them-being a skier or being a mountain biker-are what's at stake,
rather than just skiing or biking. The reason? To fire them up to join POW's advocacy in ways that will be more straightforward and accessible. Learn about
these efforts-including a new carbon footprint tool with a mission larger than
merely calculating a carbon footprint-at POW's luncheon, "Mobilizing the Outdoor Community on Meaningful Climate Action." The POW lunch will be held
tomorrow, Jan. 31, from 12 to 1 p.m. in MR405. -T.R.
