"The Guru of Outdoor Retail." Bryce Phillips founded Evo in 2001 after buying and
selling gear in order to support a snow habit that started in fifth grade. In 2005,
amid healthy online growth, he decided to open a brick-and-mortar shop in Seattle. Outposts in Denver, Portland, and Whistler soon followed.
"I felt like there was a void in the retail market," Phillips says. It needed art,
music, community, and a place where everyone, regardless of their background, knowledge of, or ability in a certain sport could come together. "Inclusivity is in our DNA," he says. "I mean, our skate park [in Seattle] is literally
called 'All Together.'" Inclusivity is even more important now than ever, as
outdoor customers become more diverse. Phillips will share his ideas on how
other shops and brands can "leverage a bunch of ideas that encapsulate the
common thread of giving back, putting good into the world, bringing new
people into the fold [of outdoor sports], and remaining in a constant state of
evolution." Phillips is on the panel, "Building Community: How To Be Relevant in
the 21st Century," which will be held today from 12 to 1 p.m. at The Camp. -T.R.
