first gym to open in 1987; today
there are 531 commercial indoor
climbing facilities in the U.S. and
Canada, according to the Climbing
Wall Association's 2018 Indoor
Climbing Industry Report.
"In the beginning, indoor climbing was a way to train for outdoor
climbing when you didn't have time
to go to the crag or if the weather
wasn't cooperating," says Renee
DeAngelis, COO of El Cap, Earth
Treks' parent company. "But over
the last several years, we've seen a
new type of member emerge. Today,
indoor climbing represents an
exciting adventurous sport in and of
itself. And for gym operators, we are
seeing the social impact we can have
on climbing and our communities
and the positive force we have when
we reach outside of our doors."

outdoor enthusiasts is by showing
the importance of giving back
to our communities and to the
organizations who protect the areas
where we love to go adventure," says
DeAngelis.

can visit the High Altitude Den, the
show's core climbing area, which
features a freestanding climbing
wall for demos, testing, and general
showing off. Happenings will run
the gamut from a mini Olympics to
universal belay certification (look
for sessions and times in the show
schedule, starting on page 60).

The Afuera after-party will celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and
creativity of people of color (POC for short) who are business

Hosted by the Color the Crag climbing festival in collaboration
with POC-owned companies-including Seirus Innovation, Evolv,
and Coral Cliffs Rock Climbing Center (plus The North Face)-the
party will go down tomorrow night, June 19, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at
Chocolate Spokes Bike Studio,
a POC-owned shop. Auction
items from brands including
Scarpa and Evolv will support
POC climbing communities
across the country and festival
poster artist Brooklyn Bell will
be selling her work (shown at
right). Hanging out with the
Brothers of Climbing and Brown
Girls Climb, with everyone
dancing together to a local DJ,
promises to be the best time

CURIOUS ABOUT OUTDOOR PRODUCT PROTOTYPING? AT
THE SHOW, YOU CAN LEARN FROM A COLLEGE PROFESSOR HOW TO VASTLY STREAMLINE THE PROCESS.
Andrew Deceuster is an
associate professor and the
director of the four-year-old
Outdoor Product Design and
Development department at
Utah State University, where
he teaches some 200 students about innovative new
practices in product prototyping. At Summer Market,
Deceuster will host two
interactive workshops titled,
"Empowering Designers to
Rapid Prototype."
"Traditionally, a designer will
come up with an idea, sketch
it out, and send it to their
Asian counterparts," explains
Deceuster, who has a Ph.D. in
engineering. "There are more
alterations, and you bounce

back and forth with three to
five prototypes." The process can take months. With
modern 3D technology, he
says, you can design it all in
a single day, do fit and style
checks, fabricate a sample,
and send a digital pattern to
the manufacturer for immediate production.
"With this rapid prototyping,
designers are truly the innovators and the manufacturer is
simply replicating the design,
which is what they're good at,"
he says.
