boarding is so low because the
general population in snowsports
of people of color is low as well.
Athletes grow out of community,
and the population for up-andcoming athletes of color is a small
pool to pull from.
Of course, lift skiing is expensive. It cost as much to put
a kid in a three-month YMCA
basketball program as it does
to buy a lift pass. Snowsports
are also cold, and that is a new
environment for many people
from the city. In general, all
kids are staying indoors more.
We need to get them up and
out, in all seasons. Sledding
and building snow forts are
snowsports. Get them comfortable and used to this awesome
environment early in life and it
will stay with them forever.
An interesting sidebar is how
snowboarding bucked the status

quo [on diversity]. Anecdotally speaking, I see and know
more riders of color than skiers.
Why? Snowboarding can be
done in a city park or on any
hill where you can build a
kicker. It is more closely related
to skateboarding, a sport that's
accessible and popular with a
diversity of young athletes.
How do we fix it? Work on
access, opportunities, instruction, and mentoring. Offer
lower cost lift passes for youth
and families. Expose kids to
snowsports at an early age. Give
people of color the opportunity
to see themselves in the sport by
showing them good examples
of who they can be. Change the
way we portray and advertise
the sports-more color, less extreme, more fun, less emphasis
on performance, and more on
the overall experience.
