Ride For Unity
IN THE PAST, CYCLING WAS A SYMBOL OF FREEDOM AND INDEPENDENCE
for many Black Americans who dealt with segregated public transportation.
That's especially true in Atlanta, where the civil rights movement has deep
roots. Atlanta communities feel a weight of responsibility to proudly uphold
the ideals of the city's leaders in that movement, including Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. and Rep. John Lewis, by engaging in peaceful protests and "good
trouble." To that end, local cyclist and activist Troy Lynch reignited the Atlanta Unity Ride, an event that first took place in 2016 when the cycling scene
in the city had just exploded. He wanted a ride that would bring all these
emerging groups together to show solidarity among the people of Atlanta.

In early June, Lynch gathered cycling community leaders and
organized two Atlanta Unity Rides, with one more still in the works.
Lynch said the goal of the first ride on June 5 was to "wrap around the
city and give the city a hug," according to route director Angel Poventud. The second, on June 13, met at two different points and flawlessly
converged at the capital. Both rides ended at The King Center. Thousands of cyclists of all colors, ages, and skill levels joined, with each
bike as diverse as the riders. Track bikes, enduros, cargos, tandems,
and more filled 10 miles of Atlanta's streets for slow-rolling, peaceful,
