From the Editor WHIRL CLASS The Carousel of Happiness is made of wood and pure magic. Dear Reader, If you sold the movie rights to your life, what would the film be like? Mine would be awesome: Guy stares at computer, types, yells at computer, yells at himself (earning an R rating for "adult language," a misnomer if there ever was one), stares at smartphone, makes a call ... . Just don't expect to see it at a theater near you anytime soon. On the other hand, the story of Scott Harrison truly is the stuff of a major motion picture. Journalist Tracy Ross, who lives in the same Colorado town as Harrison, profiles him masterfully in "The Carousel of Happiness," on page 76. It's a tale of combat, international intrigue, and mountain-town heroism, involving a whale, a love interest (Harrison's indomitable wife, Ellen), adorable children, a soul-saving music box, a strange wall 22 SPIRIT MAY 2014 that leads to another dimension, a calliope, and a powerful theme: the true meaning of happiness. Oh, and also a lovingly hand-carved carousel (wait till you see the pictures by photographer Tyler Stableford). While we at Spirit like celebrities, we especially love doing stories about real people and places with soul. After reading "The Carousel of Happiness," you could book a flight to Denver; drive to Nederland, Colorado; and ride the carousel yourself. It costs a buck. Y'all hear me, Hollywood?
