Spirit Magazine - May 2014 - (Page 24)

Your Words Dear Spirit, As a 59-year-old father of five, I found your March cover story, "The New American Dream," to be a well-articulated look at the current and future socioeconomic status of modern America. One of the things I particularly appreciated was your pragmatic yet upbeat analysis and your nonjudgmental view of millennials. Several years ago, I went back to school and got a degree in landscape architecture. I was lucky enough to be part of a great class of kids and experience firsthand what an awesome generation they are. After finishing your story, it occurred to me: I went back to school to get a job, but I ended up getting a life. Thank you for helping me finally articulate it. The changing economy is spurring a radical new approach to living, and to earning a living. And for a growing number of creative entrepreneurs, that approach seems to be working. by TAFFY BRODESSER-AKNER photography by JEFF WILSON, DAVE LAURIDSEN, KEVIN J. From now on, when someone tells us to get a life, we'll be sure to take it as good advice. SEND 'EM IN Write to us at 2811 McKinney Ave., Suite 360, Dallas, TX 75204 or email letters@spiritmag.com. I'm an entrepreneur in the field of broadcast television. I went out on my own several years ago, and it's been a huge blessing to create my own content and do the work I want to do. I think your article will be incredibly inspiring to many people who have one foot in cube city and the other itching for more purposeful work. I often tell people, "In order to grow as a person, one must be comfortable being uncomfortable!" I hope people read your insightful work and decide that it's time for them to be uncomfortable. -MARIO ARMSTRONG B A LT I M O R E May you stay uncomfortable, Mario! A LITTLE NUDGE The article "The New American Dream" struck a chord with me. As a mother of three who was stuck in a marketing job with no fulfillment or opportunity, I knew a professional change was imminent. The article expressed everything I've struggled with in my decision. I can't wait to use my artistic talents in a way that will fulfill me and give me time to focus on what's really important: my family, myself, and my passions. Thanks for the nudge! -BETSY SIDEBOT TOM CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA We know some marketers who love their work but hope you can use those talents in new ways, Betsy. Good luck, and keep in touch. ANTI-FLUFF On account of traveling most of my adult life, I've had the privilege, or perhaps not so much, of reading many articles in airline magazines. With few exceptions, most of them are merely "fluff" pieces with little substance and no redeeming value. Then, on my last Southwest flight, I read "The New American Dream."
