Business PITCH Libiro This e-platform is turning the page for fans of indie lit. DIC T IONA RY Here's how Libiro co-founder Ben Galley describes the burgeoning e-book store: "As both a self-published author and a self publishing consultant, the lack of representation for independent authors in the book industry had become very apparent to me. Also, the downfalls of major e-book stores for this group-lower royalties, quarterly payments, difficulty of standing out among traditional titles-left me searching for an alternative that didn't exist. Enter Libiro, an online marketplace designed specifically with the indie writer and reader in mind. Currently, there are more than 450 books on the site from about 200 people. While the average amount you'll pay is $3, we also offer many free books. Users can browse by genre or peruse the best-selling and best- 54 SPIRIT MAY 2014 reviewed texts on the homepage. The submission process aims to be just as simple: Writers that comply with our guidelines upload their books, which are then reviewed by Libiro staffers for quality and content. Those that meet our standards are made live. All of this typically takes place within 24 hours. Everything we do is in support of indies, which is why we only take 25 percent of royalties-other retailers take up to 65 percent-and allow authors to request ad hoc payments as well as run promotions when they please. Our goal is to have 10,000 books on Libiro's shelves by the end of 2014." libiro.com JOMO abbreviation Joy of missing out; as defined by author and career coach Maite Barón in the context of digital detox.
