Driven
to Serve
For volunteer Jim Runyan, being a Road
To Recovery driver involves more than just
giving patients a ride to treatment.
"When I retired, my wife discovered she had twice as
much husband and half as much income," Jim Runyan
of Danville, Pennsylvania, says with a laugh. "So I decided
to do something constructive with my time." Since 2001,
Runyan has been a volunteer driver for the American Cancer
Society Road To Recovery program, which gives free rides
to patients needing treatment. "I wanted to give back, I like
to drive, and I'm a people person," he says. "It's a real good
service the Society provides."
Runyan drives Michael Howell (below) to an appointment at Columbia County Cancer Center in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
Mariellen Miller (opposite page) has also used the Road To Recovery service.
