100th Birthday redoubles efforts to make this cancer's last century.
Millions of people learned more about the American Cancer Society's century of saving lives during the 100th Birthday commemoration that began this past spring (May 22,
officially), boosting cancer awareness and raising crucial funds.
Having a Ball
Officially capping the
12-month observance of the
Society's 100th year is the
inaugural Birthday Ball, set for
May 17, 2014, in Los Angeles.
More than 600 guests-
business leaders, philanthropists, sponsors and entertainment figures-will illuminate
the Beverly Wilshire Hotel
ballroom in Beverly Hills, with
event chairs and generous
Society donors Lee and Mickey
Segal presiding over the
festivities. It's all to commemorate the progress we've made
together against cancer, which
since the early 1990s has
resulted in an
20% decrease in
deaths from the
disease. That
translates into
more than a
million lives
saved that
would have
otherwise been
lost to cancer.
The Society's goal with the campaign was to get loud about the progress made against
cancer and to remind everyone that silence won't finish the fight-only action will.
Lights and electronic billboards illuminated buildings and cities nationwide in honor
of the event. In New York, a display window at 10 Rockefeller Plaza showcased the Life
List of NBC's Today show host and breast cancer survivor Hoda Kotb, while some 1,000
Society Facebook followers created their own Life Lists. Celebrity social media was all
abuzz about the birthday as more than 30 talent and media organizations posted a
message in support of the Society.
Some 300,000 people visited the cancer.org/fight site, bringing in 56,000 pledges to take a Moment AGAINST Silence.
Supporters also responded generously to a text-to-give
TV ad campaign, generating more than $140,000 in
revenue; that translates to roughly 14,000 nights of free
lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers.
To celebrate a century of lifesaving achievements, the
Society chose music legend Quincy Jones to lead an
unforgettable evening of performances at the historic
Fox Theatre in Atlanta. His stage magic helped
launch the Society's most ambitious undertaking
yet: finishing the fight! In fact, the organization
is asking supporters to help put it out of
business. Only when that goal is reached
will the fight be over.
