This month, the small seaside town of Beaufort, North Carolina, hosts its annual Wine & Food Weekend (April 24–28). Now in its ninth year, this event brings chefs and winemakers from across the world to share their love of exceptional food and wine. This year’s festival celebrates fresh and local foods from the South, paired with wine from France, Italy, California, and Oregon. The five-day celebration features 21 different events. Sheri Castle, Southern food extraordinaire and author of the award-winning book The New Southern Garden Cookbook, will appear at several festivities. Across town, historic homes and restaurants host intimate winemaker dinners and vintner receptions. For example, James Beard–nominated chef Vivian Howard, of Chef and the Farmer restaurant in nearby Kinston, will pair her seasonal farm-to-fork fare with wines from Oregon’s Sokol Blosser winery. Foodies can also expect a fashionshow luncheon, wine seminars, and a gala and auction. The Vin de Mer Grand Tasting and Culinary Village, one of North Carolina’s largest outdoor tented events, includes cooking demos, wine tastings, and samples from more than a dozen of the area’s top restaurants. Situated along the Southern Outer Banks, Beaufort is the state’s third-oldest town, but it still attracts its fair share of hipsters — Budget Travel magazine recently named Beaufort as one of its Coolest Small Towns in America.
