Visitors make the winter pilgrimage to sunny Arizona to view showdowns between the world’s top competitors. Horse enthusiasts can tour the stables or join discussions at educational seminars. Enjoy a meal at the international cuisine court, then browse offerings from more than 300 vendors, including jewelry, clothing, and art. The event is good fun with a good heart, raising thousands of dollars for charities, including the March of Dimes, Horseman’s Distress Fund, and Cox Charities. Established in 1953, the Scottsdale show began as a modest local event showcasing about 50 horses. Today, 11 full days can barely contain the calendar of events, and exhibitors hail from more than 50 icture Arizona, and you’re likely to imagine cowboys crossing the desert on horseback. But what about an exotic stallion decked in velvet, jewels, and a jingling gold halter? Or an excited yearling in winning garlands? It’s time to rethink Arizona horse country. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show brings equestrian events to the Sonoran Desert, along with more than 2,200 Arabian and halfArabian horses, 300,000 visitors, and more than $1 million in prizes. While the annual event — this year, February 14–24 at WestWorld of Scottsdale — brings in the world’s best Arabian breeders, trainers, and competitors, families can also join the fun. Kids gather to “Paint a Pony,” creating works of art on plaster horses, or try on february 2013 countries.
