engage Giving Miles for Good A GIVING WAY The Hope Takes Flight campaign offers good times for a good cause. By Tara Titcombe ★ Every year, US Airways hosts its Hope Takes Flight initiative for United Way. Through month-long activities, events and employee participation, the 2013 fundraiser raised $1.55 million. The airline kicked off the campaign with a JetPull, in which employees from each hub formed teams to see who could pull a 50-ton Airbus A319 15 feet in the fastest time, and a Geek Off to test employees' aviation knowledge. US Airways also held an employee drive to collect individual pledges for the United Way. US Airways stations across the country enjoyed adding their own level of creativity to the festivities. For example, flight attendants had the opportunity to bid on hiring Hector Adler, vice president of inflight services, to work shifts and update flight-attendant manuals for them, while the Houston station let employees purchase an article of clothing for their station manager, Rob Davis, to wear with a clown costume. After one month, and after sharing some fun and laughs, employees set a new company record by donating $1.55 million to the United Way. Rescue Rally Through its Puppies in Flight program, US Airways transports service dogs around the world. Employee volunteers recently held a rescue rally to transport nine Chihuahua puppies from the western U.S. to cities along the East Coast, where they're in greater demand.
