explore The Wild Life of Whistler Blackcomb Western Canada’s massive twin peaks rival those of Europe. For many skiers, they are the holy By Brion O’Connor grail. It was early January 1991, before British Columbia’s Whistler and Blackcomb resorts combined. Two of my brothers and I arrived at Whistler Village. On the heels of a white-knuckle bus ride, we opted to sample the nightlife at the iconic Savage Beagle before thinking about skiing. A scantily clad brunette, boasting a chiseled physique that revealed her powder addiction, sidled up sporting a bandolier featuring not bullets, but shot glasses. In one holster was a bottle of Jose Cuervo. Scanning the nightclub, bathed in flashing disco lights and packed with a remarkably eclectic mix of ★ people dancing to a pulsating Euro synth-pop beat, I suddenly realized how far I was from my New England home. This was another world. That feeling was reinforced the next morning, when I peeled back the curtain of my hotel room and through bleary eyes got my first look at the two enormous peaks that today make up this astounding resort. Greg Stump had a similar epiphany in the late 1980s. The flamboyant filmmaker behind the quintessential ski movie Blizzard of Aahhhs was convinced to visit by Blackcomb marketing director David Perry.
