London T usairwaysmag.com It’s about time for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The 2012 Summer Olympics, starting late this month, will mark the third time the city has hosted — but it’s the first time London has welcomed the event. The 1908 Olympics were scheduled for Rome, but the massive 1906 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius played the spoiler. Disaster-relief funds depleted the coffers of the Italian gov- ernment. The games needed a new venue, and the English, masters of soldiering on, stepped up to the plate. Then in 1948, when few were eager to bear the expense during the slow postwar road to recovery, London held a low-budget effort referred to as the “Austerity Games” — some athletes had to bring their own bag lunches to the stadium. That will hardly be the case this summer when the games are played July 27–August 12. The English have slated well over $15 billion — yes, 34 july 2012 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
