Two of this month’s travel
features bear noting. “Altitude
Is Everything” takes you to the high
country of western North Carolina, one
of my favorite places. If you haven’t
visited Boone, Blowing Rock, or the
nearby areas, you owe it to yourself to
spend a few days. The weather is ideal
— even in winter if you like snow
sports. The feature begins on page 126.
Easily the most eye-opening story
for me in this issue is the feature on
Northwest Arkansas. Frankly, I never
gave the region all that much thought.
But the more I learned and the more
I spoke with folks from that area, the
greater my appreciation.
One of the most stunning collections of American art (from colonial
through the 20th century) is housed

here at the Crystal Bridges Museum.
There are works from Mary Cassatt,
Rockwell, Warhol, Lichtenstein, and
other notables. The museum sits on
128 acres with sculpture gardens and
art trails. And it’s free.
Two area communities, Bella Vista
and Bella Vista Village, have garnered
national praise for being among the
nation’s best in several lifestyle categories. And the southern Ozark landscape
adds to the charm.
The Walton Arts Center offers more
than 350 annual events with A-list
musical artists and Broadway plays.
Another surprise: a 450-acre free-roam
nature preserve for lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, and bobcats.
