LOUIS Bold, contemporary, compelling — Opera Theatre of Saint Louis will challenge all your assumptions about opera. Take Champion — premiering this month — which tells the true story of 1962 world welterweight champion boxer Emile Grifﬁth. He claimed his title in a televised match that resulted in the death of his opponent Benny “The Kid” Paret. The ﬁght haunted Grifﬁth for the rest of his life. Commissioned in partnership with Jazz St. Louis, the opera is set to a unique score by ﬁve-time Grammy Award–winning composer Terence Blanchard. The libretto is by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Michael 192 JUNE 2013 usairwaysmag.com By IVY LAMB Cristofer, who sees Grifﬁth as a contemporary tragic hero. “For me, Emile’s story not only asks the question of what it means to be a man,” Cristofer says. “It asks what it means to be a human being.” Arthur Woodley, distinguished for his portrayal of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, plays the central role of Grifﬁth. One of the world’s most acclaimed mezzo-sopranos, Denyce Graves, plays Grifﬁth’s mother, Emelda. Champion runs June 15–30 as part of Opera Theatre’s Festival Season. Other productions in the 2013 season include The Kiss, The Pirates of Penzance, and Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Pagliacci. During the next two seasons, the opera will continue its three-year cycle, titled New Works, Bold Voices, featuring world premiere operas by American composers. Champion is the ﬁrst in the series, to be followed by Twenty-Seven by Ricky Ian Gordon, featuring star soprano Stephanie Blythe, next year, and Shalimar the Clown by Jack Perla, based on the novel by Salman Rushdie, in 2015.
