embark From the Editor How Are You Reading This? # COVER PHOTO COURTESY OF LOS ANGELES TOURISM & CONVENTION BOARD I recently read an op-ed piece by syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker that struck a chord. In writing about the digital vs. print conversation, she noted that “there is something uniquely sublime about print that has nothing to do with content. Hard copy is a full-on sensory experience.” She goes on to say that she is unlikely to race to the sofa with an electronic device with the same anticipation as with a real book — or to the hammock with a new magazine. Parker likes paper because it is real and “provides an organic connection to our natural world.” Paper comes from the sun, water, and soil that nourished a tree. I’m with her on this, despite sounding so old school. But I’m hardly a Luddite. I’m writing this electronically, and I just checked an incoming email. And, oh, a text. I’m a willing, often eager, participant in the digital age, but not at the expense of abandoning paper. I ask: As you read this, would you rather be paging on a plastic screen or flipping through the pages? If you turn to page 70 (flip with your fingers), you’ll see the largest feature we’ve ever run, “Arts and Culture, LA Style.” Los Angeles is huge, and so is this story — at 115 pages. There are more than a few surprises — even, I’m sure, for those who live there. Finally, for those feeling a bit of stress or turmoil, turn to page 56 to find a tranquil, calming escape that will provide a respite in words and pictures. Until next time, enjoy your flight.
