“You wanna race?”
A bicycle pulls up next to mine at a red light
in the hip neighborhood of Adams Morgan in
Washington, DC.
My challenger has a decade, maybe two, on
me, but he’s dressed in colorful Lycra and hightech road shoes, and he’s perched on an aerodynamic road bike. I’m dressed, well, like exactly
what I am: a tourist, in sensible, but not racewinning, flats. And I’m riding a 45-pound, threespeed bike with the words “Capital Bikeshare”
on the frame.
Do I want to race? No — and not just because
I’m certain to lose.

I’ve traveled this route before — from the
White House out Connecticut Avenue toward the
National Zoo — but I’m just now discovering this
pretty, residential stretch of Adams Morgan. Like
most people, I’ve always taken the Metro’s Red
Line instead, traveling underneath much of the
city.
So, as the cyclist speeds off, I ride slowly and
take in the sights.
I pedal through Adams Morgan to Woodley
Park, crossing the elegant Taft Bridge over Rock
Creek gorge. I cruise
through Foggy Bottom and West End to
the restaurants of
Georgetown, which

i’ve traveled this
route before,
but i have a new
perspective now
that i’m on a bike.
