Our featured destination is Winter Park, Florida, the smallest city, by far, we've ever selected as a primary destination. Only a 15-minute drive north from Orlando, Winter Park sits in stark contrast to its neighbor. The population is under 30,000, and there are no amusement thrills, hi-tech extravaganzas, or professional sports teams. Instead, this quiet enclave is home to any number of first-rate restaurants, lakes, parks, and museums. Winter Park is by many accounts a nearly perfect place to live. It's walkable, bike friendly, beautifully maintained, and home to a number of cultural and art festivals. The city also maintains a well-preserved sense of The Story Behind the Stories By Lance Elko history with a standout liberal arts school, Rollins College. Our scribe, Scott Morris, has lived close to Winter Park and has spent a great deal of time there visting his parents. After living across the country, he returned last year and pitched me on reporting on Winter Park. I balked - we don't usually award cover stories to small communities. But I soon realized that US Airways has a hefty passenger service to Orlando.
