US Airways pays tribute to its heritage with iconic paint schemes. By Tara Titcombe PAINTING THE PAST T he US Airways plane you’ve boarded probably looks like most any other plane in the ﬂeet — a classic white body with a navy underside and a navy tail with the airline’s ﬂag logo. But you may ﬁnd yourself aboard one of the heritage theme planes. These planes, with their special paint schemes, tell the tale of the airline’s history. Arizona, Texas, and Colorado, Allegheny changed its name to USAir in 1979. The name was ofﬁcially changed again in 1997 to US Airways. Allegheny Airlines 66 MAY 2013 Piedmont This is where it all began. Allegheny Airlines, originally known as All American Aviation, began in 1939 as a mail service and then changed its name to All American Airways in 1949 as it transitioned to passenger service. Its route system grew throughout the east, and the name was changed to Allegheny Airlines to reﬂect its network. The airline continued to grow, merging with Lake Central Airlines in 1968 and with Mohawk Airlines in 1972. To better reﬂect its expanding route network, which included destinations in In 1948, Piedmont Airlines began operations by carrying one paying passenger, who also happened to be its founder, T. H. Davis. From that ﬁrst passenger, Piedmont quickly became the sixth largest U.S. airline in number of passengers carried. Piedmont acquired Empire Airlines in 1986 and was then absorbed by USAir in 1989 in what was the largest airline merger at the time.
