The Story Behind
the Stories
By Lance Elko
COVER PHOTO BY CHRIS ROGERS, HAIR AND MAKE-UP STYLING BY AMANDA ROBINSON
Our May issue is a smaller size
than usual, but it’s a big one in
terms of heart. Several of the stories
here are some of my favorites of the
year so far.
For our cover story, we tracked
down Bill Citara, whom I got to know
years ago as a first-rate writer on all
things edible and potable. I was a fan
of his work from the first story he filed
with us. Bill’s resume includes stints as
the wine and food critic for the San
Francisco Examiner and the Miami
New Times. His coverage of the newest
and best in Keys cuisine begins on
page 58.
Another writer who has delivered
some excellent stories for us is Alex
Salkever. Once a journalist for BusinessWeek, he opted for the big change and
left the East Coast for Hawaii, where
he lived for 15 years. And that’s where
I found him when looking for an ace
reporter for stories on Hawaiian culture and cuisine. In search of another
island story, I contacted Alex, who
informed me that he now lived in San
Francisco — and he sold me on a story
about the annual Dipsea Race in
Marin County. Fully trusting his storytelling skills, I assigned him. On first
read, I found myself engrossed — to
the point where I felt that I was running (ouch!) this most rigorous course
with him. His story begins on page 45.
On a final note, check out our
Must Read department (page 72),
where we get a first look at the latest
book from Andrew Carroll, a true
sleuth with a big heart.
