Frequent Flyer
As a Chairman's Preferred
member, Sherry Wood
is often upgraded to First
Class, and she's just as
often giving up her seat.
How often do you travel?
As a clinical research associate in oncology and
multiple sclerosis, I travel all along the eastern
seaboard to research institutes. I spend quite a
bit of time in Boston at Dana-Farber and Mass
General, as well as at Duke in North Carolina.
I travel about 75 to 80 percent of the time.

My fiancé and I had a lake house in North
Carolina, and it was my favorite retreat. We
decided that we want to finally start using
some of our miles to take more trips. So, we
sold a permanent retreat to explore some new
ones. This summer, we're going to British
Columbia and then to Rome and Madrid.
What do you enjoy most about traveling?
I like flying. It's like I'm in my own private
spa - or at least it was before we had Wi-Fi
on planes! Now, I'm more connected.
You're known to sometimes give up your First Class
seat? Why?
For so long, I would see soldiers dressed in

fatigues when I was traveling, and I would
always shake their hand and thank them.
When I got Chairman's status, I began
offering my seat to them when I was upgraded
to First Class. However, these soldiers are
proud and replied with a "No thank you."
I began to have the flight attendants invite
the soldiers to take my seat, but they still often
refused. Then before boarding I started asking
the gate agent to anonymously assign my First
Class seat. And that worked.
Sometimes I'll be introduced to them -
and they're always so thankful. I had a
gentleman in Philadelphia tell me that he
was grateful because it was his third attempt
to leave and go home for his daughter's
six-month birthday.
This is just my way of paying it forward,
and I encourage others in First Class to do the
same. I was just in Charlotte to catch a flight,
and there were three of us trying to give our
seats to a soldier - and that's what I'm striving
for! We should consider it our obligation for
these people who have given so much.
