The Water
Is Fine
But in Encinitas, the
food is even better.
By Hannah Sherk
When I miss Southern California, my taste
buds feel it first. My hometown is a northern San Diego oasis known for raising a slew of
surf heroes. But my most nostalgic memories of
Encinitas are of late-night veggie burritos on the
beach and hot (but never too hot) days spent sipping iced horchata. The beaches are amazing.
But Encinitas is also home to - and I'll dare
to put this notion to our fact-checkers
- the best food in the world.
Native San Diegans are the first to
agree, but the last to give directions to their
favorite breakfast burrito. They're protective of
the coastal paradise: Chests puff over secret surf
spots, cryptic-cool lingo, and rival taco stands.
So consider this story the hand-drawn map
you'll need to eat as well as the locals do. Luckily,
fresh-food and ethnic restaurants, trendy-to-retro
shopping, and beach access all live on a two-mile
straightaway of Highway 101. But before you start
your Pacific food tour, these tips will get you eating,
speaking, and surfing (OK, probably not) like every
other well-fed local.
1. From San Diego, stick to the cliff-hugging
101 and follow the smell of fresh tortillas north.
You've almost made it when you pass the bronze
statue of the "Cardiff Kook" (a "kook" is a surfer
who . . . can't). You'll find him dressed by the locals in various states of mockery. Past pranks have
included the adornments of boas and beads, as well
as putting the Kook in the jaws of a huge, elaborately constructed shark.
2. Unless you speak fluently, don't use your
high school Spanish to order "tacos con black
frijoles." There's a direct correlation between a
#
cold plate of Mexican food and how long the waiter had to suffer your conjugations.
3. You're eating at Swami's Cafe for breakfast,
Raul's for lunch, and Solace & the Moonlight
Lounge for dinner and drinks - and that's final.

Behind a surf-stickered cash register, Betty takes
your order. Good luck finding a cholesterol spike off
this menu. Swami's Cafe is known for whole foods,
fresh juices, and tastes-like-the-real-thing vegetarian
specials. They've been doing the "health fad" long
enough to know it's not a fad - it's delicious.
The only seating is outdoors on the patio, because between the almost nil chance of rain and the
