beST oF eDUCATIon Keeping up with the Miller School of Albemarle’s innovative cycling program A Classroom on Wheels Cycling the Upper Meadow W hile most highschool athletes prepare for the season with wind sprints and scrimmages, these girls and boys fly downhill at 45 miles per hour. Junior endurance cycling is not your average sport — and Miller School of Albemarle is not your average school. The 170-student coeducational college preparatory boarding school is set on 1,600 picturesque acres in Charlottesville, Virginia, just 12 miles west of the UVA grounds. With a commitment to “minds, hands, and hearts,” the school encourages students to excel in and out of the classroom. “Miller is an excellent place to ride because of the culture,” says the director november 2012 of the endurance program, Andy Guptill. “There are so many junior cyclists around the country who train alone. At Miller, it’s a peersupported environment, and one where the school is also on board.” The campus is ideal for rigorous training. “The location is second to none,” Guptill explains. “The hilly terrain means that you can have a different ride every day of the year.” That dynamic cycling has paid off — the team is competitive in junior races, with wins around the country. Miller’s special facilities also allow riders to develop their mechanical skills. In the team bike shop, students learn to make repairs, or pull a frame off the wall and build a bike from scratch. To give back to the community, they organize race events and invite locals to bring their bikes for free repairs.
