Veterans Day.
by Tara Titcombe
On November 9, the city
of Charlotte will honor
and celebrate the nation’s veterans. The uptown streets will be
filled with spectators waving
flags as marching bands and
former military members walk in
the Salute to Veterans parade
organized by the Carolinas Freedom Foundation.
The foundation was formed in 1995 by Quincy
Collins, a former prisoner of war and retired Air
Force colonel, to promote patriotism. While it
works year-round with organizations and groups to
honor veterans, this weekend in November is a
special time.
The day before the parade, the foundation hosts
the Freedom Breakfast. “We invite veterans and
have about 700 community, civic, and government
leaders attending,” says Obie Oakley, executive
director of the foundation. “The breakfast has
become an integral event, and it’s especially
emotional.” Family members are presented with a
hand-painted portrait of their fallen loved one, and

others are sworn in to become U.S. citizens.
“When you listen to what they pledge, it reminds
us of our own obligation as citizens,” Oakley says.
During this weekend, US Airways is a proud
sponsor of the breakfast and the parade. “Because
of our partnership
with the airline,
we’ve been able to
build our Veterans
Day events into
something significant for our community,” Oakley
says. “We can just
do things better.”
