Just ask Igor Sikorsky III. Grandson of the helicopter magnate, Sikorsky cradles a glass tumbler in his fingers, gently rolling his wrists so the jagged, sparkling shards of ice slide against each other with a distinct clink. “Listen to that,” Sikorsky whispers, though we’re alone in the dining room at the Bradford Camps. “There’s nothing else that sounds like the ★ ice we get from our lake. I’ve had guests say, ‘That ice must have come from Munsungan.’ ” Yes, the ice in Sikorsky’s glass, and in mine, is different. In many ways, it reflects just how different this place is from the world I left behind only hours before. As I take my after-dinner drink out to the lakeshore, amid the cool breezes and fiery hues of the sky above Munsungan Ridge, I sense a connection to the past. Here at the Bradford Camps in Maine’s North Woods, history and lore form a bond as steadfast as the molecules of water. Walking out to the old wooden dock, I see concentric circles spread as fish chase flies, forming the only ripples in an otherwise glassy surface. I think of Grandpère — my maternal grandfather — and know he’d love this place.
