embark CEO Letter thank You for Flying With Us Making Connections Your travels with us today will most likely take you through one of our hub airports in Phoenix, Philadelphia, or Charlotte, or through Reagan National Airport in our focus city of Washington, D.C. The majority of our customers flying with us through our hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport are connecting to other destinations in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Europe, or the Caribbean. But this month, Charlotte will be the final destination for thousands of travelers as they converge in the city for the Democratic National Convention the week of September 3. We’re proud that Charlotte, home to 7,000 US Airways employees, is the stage for this important event. We’ve served the region since the late 1940s, when Piedmont Airlines, one of the carriers ★ tom Goedeke, a Us Airways mechanic, captured this shot of one of our Airbus A330 aircraft taking off from our Charlotte hub to London Gatwick last fall. to learn more about Charlotte, which plays host to the 2012 Democratic National Convention, turn to page 56. that came together to form today’s US Airways, began operating in the Queen City. Since then, Charlotte Douglas International Airport has grown to become the world’s sixth busiest airport in operations, serving more than 39 million passengers each year. Our operation of 650 daily flights to more than 130 destinations has made Charlotte the world’s fourth largest single-airline hub. With more departures than Air France at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle and British Airways at London Heathrow, US Airways’ operation at our largest hub is a major reason why companies like Chiquita and Electrolux chose Charlotte for their corporate and North American headquarters, respectively, and why the Democratic Party chose to hold its 2012 national convention in the city. None of this would be possible without the efforts of our Charlotte-based employees. As the region’s fifth largest employer, we boast a diverse culture and a culture of volunteerism. Not only do our people work hard every day to run a safe, reliable airline and take care of our customers, but they also selflessly give their time to help make the region a better place in which to live, work, and play. At press time, our employee and retiree volunteer corps, the Do Crew, had volunteered more than 700 hours this year participating in a variety of community-based arts and culture, human services, and educational projects that enhance the quality of life in the Charlotte metro area. If Charlotte is your final destination or you are connecting through the airport, you’re sure to enjoy your stay, no matter how brief. To make your travels with us easier today, turn to page 118 for a map of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. On behalf of the 32,000 employees of US Airways, thank you for flying with us today. We hope to see you again on a flight with us soon. Doug Parker Chairman and CEO 6 september 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
