| university ★ spotlight | Welcome to Liberty University Training Champions for Christ since 1971 Liberty University is not your ordinary institution of higher education — there’s a unique story and mission behind it all. ★ Tucked into the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Liberty University is the vision of the late Dr. Jerry Falwell Sr., who dreamed of a Christian college that would develop men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills essential to impact tomorrow’s world. The university’s journey is one of facing giants, making the impossible possible, and seeing the power of fervent prayer. In 1971, Falwell founded the university in Lynchburg, Virginia, as Lynchburg Baptist College. The vision of a world-class university began with 154 students and four faculty members. Nurtured by prayer and faithful commitment, the dream and the college began to grow, as students and faculty were challenged to influence the moral and ethical course of America. In light of that vision, Lynchburg Baptist College officially became Liberty Baptist College in 1976. Just a year later, construction began on Liberty Mountain, where the campus now stretches over 6,800 acres with spectacular mountain views.
