By Wes Isley ★ Mention Puerto Rico, and most travelers imagine rum drinks, palm-fringed beaches, and Spanish fortresses. Look closer, however, to find a centuries-old fine art tradition which produces contemporary artists recognized on the island and around the world. The capital of San Juan offers numerous museums and galleries in one convenient destination, with collections highlighting Puerto Rico's contributions to painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other media. Pressed for time? Start in romantic Old San Juan, and pop into the free Museo de San Juan, located a short walk from San Felipe del Morro. Diversions Housed in an old public market where students can be found painting in the courtyard, it features only three works. However, these three jewels succinctly present the island's earliest and most influential painters. A 1776 self-portrait by Luis Paret y Alcázar shows the artist dressed as a local peasant, or jíbaro, in bare feet and carrying plantains - a recurring theme in Puerto Rican art. Paret is highlighted for teaching José Campeche, the first native-born artist to achieve international fame. Known for religious images and portraits, Campeche is represented here with Gobernador Don Ramón de Castro (1800), a large canvas incorporating Rococo motifs and presenting the mighty Spanish governor against a backdrop of San Juan military fortifications. Last is a sketch of one of the island's most iconic paintings, El Velorio (1893) by Francisco Oller.
