Sure, there are the big name national tackle companies out there, but we Pennsylvanians are inventive sorts. We can’t help wanting to try to fool fish with our own creations. Teaming the state’s tradition of fishing and bent for artistry, mechanical skills and practical knowledge, we make for our personal use or make and market our homegrown lures. You’re not likely to find Pennsylvania-made fishing lures, especially those produced by “mom-and-pop” operations, in big box stores. Look for them instead in local sporting goods shops along secondary roads and in small towns. They may be on the counter by the cash register or on a display hook on the wall in rural diners, neighborhood hardware stores or even corner groceries. Outdoor sports shows are also good places to find Pennsylvania-made fishing lures. Don’t be surprised if those manning the booth all have the same last name. Homegrown lures are often a family affair. Sometimes a glass-sided, water-filled tank will be on display at the booth, so the lures can be shown in action, and you can see how they work before you buy them. Talking to the manufacturer will give you tips on how to work the lure to get the best fish catching action out of it. Or, get a tip about an outstanding homegrown lure from another angler. According to Ann Marie Martin, owner of Pcola’s Lures in Saint Michael, word of mouth is how most customers find out about the Niti-1 lure. But, anglers can be a secretive lot, too, especially when they find an especially hot lure. Is the Niti-1 hot? Its unofficial nickname is “Trout Killer.”

Pcola’s Lures in Saint Michael offers homegrown fishing lures including the popular Niti-1 lure.

Martin tells a story about being at a sport show with her spoon-style lures and having an angler approach the booth. The angler looked both ways and dug into his pocket for money. He wanted her to fill his order quickly so no one would see. Another man walked up behind him and said, “So, this is your secret, huh?” “You better not tell, you better swear,” said the first man. “He didn’t want him to know, and they were brothers,” said Martin. Anglers are famous for secret spots, baits and lures, but the problem with being so close-mouthed is something Ann Marie’s dad, Andrew P. Pcola, inventor of the Niti-1, used to say. He said, “If you don’t tell, we don’t sell, and someday you’re not going to have any.” Fortunately, enough anglers are letting the word out about Pcola’s lures. After many years, they are still in business in the tiny town just east of Johnstown, along Route 869.
