of Solid Fishing for

Looking like winter itself, the crappie made a dazzling foreground in front of my friend’s bright coveralls. I snapped the picture. “Have you ever seen such beautiful crappie?” I asked. “Not in my lifetime,” answered my friend. Indeed the crappies coming from the winter-clear waters of Lake Nockamixon looked particularly stunning. Maybe, it was the sunrise light creaking over the Bucks County hills or the sparkling iridocyte cells on the fish’s snowy sides. These were indeed beautiful crappies and big, nearly two pounders. With fortune smiling upon us, the crappies started hitting as soon as we dunked our jigs and bait. Early-bird ice anglers and early-day crappies melded together in perfect unison. It wasn’t even that cold. Well, it was, but it wasn’t windy, so we dealt with it. We were targeting crappies, so we prepared for crappies with our selection of jigging sticks, jigs, spoons and bait. Using our knowledge of solid fishing and our hard earned secrets, we collected a nice stringer of crappies. The collection went on for about two hours. Of course, the application of secrets depended on the time of the trip and location. This trip was no exception. January and February is core ice season. Where the crappies are in early January is not where they’re likely to be in mid-February. Also, each lake will tell a different tale. For Pennsylvania purposes, we can divide ice lakes into two very broad types: deep lakes with incremental depth changes and shallower lakes with definite weed lines. Given the latter, I’ll always look for winter crappies along the outer edge of a weed line. Finding the line is a crucial factor. During this time, crappies will move from inside the weed area to the outer line. Yes, inside to out. Inside the weeds, you’ll pick up a few crappies here and there, drilling plenty of holes. This is slow, daytime fishing for crappies. I’ll never knock that nice fish someone lucks into, and certainly record-sized crappies can be caught at high noon. But, for numbers and size in shallow waters, I wait for the low-light periods, and even the night, to catch a number of good crappies on the outside line of a weedbed. The first ice period on shallower lakes will find crappies mulling through the weed beds. First ice, whether it occurs in mid-December
When a school shows up on the screen, you need to react quickly to get offerings down to that level. It’s not easy, but when four or five tip-ups go off in a flurry, it’s certainly fun.
