Commission Engineers Presented with 2012 Regional Dam Safety Award
Each year the Associate of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) selects one candidate from each of its four regions across the country to receive its Regional Award of Merit. ASDSO’s Northeast Region is comprised of eleven states, plus the United States Virgin Islands. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s (PFBC) Engineering Section was selected to receive this year’s Northeast Regional Award of Merit. The award was presented during the ASDSO’s annual conference in September held in Denver, Colorado. Jack Rokavec, PE, PFBC, accepted the award on behalf of his staff, Gerald Woomer, PE; Jason Anderson, EIT; and Paul Urbanik, EIT, who also work on dam safety projects. According to the ASDSO, “The Regional Awards of Merit are given to individuals, companies, organizations, municipalities or other entities working in the dam safety field that have made outstanding contributions to dam safety on a regional level. Past winners include companies owning or operating dams that have shown marked improvement in maintaining or rehabilitating their dam(s) and their dam safety programs; individuals who have made exemplary contributions to dam safety in their communities; and

local agencies with innovative ideas for improving their dam safety programs. These awards are intended to recognize the overall contributions of an individual or organization, not to recognize the merits of a dam project.”

Applications Now Being Accepted for the Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp
Applications are being accepted for the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited’s Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp held June 16 through June 21 at the Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County. Curriculum is based on college level classes, and students are instructed in ecology, aquatic biology, geology, hydrogeology, erosion and sedimentation control, ichthyology, riparian corridor protection, watershed management, entomology and take part in a stream habitat improvement project. Nationally known instructors teach students fly casting, fly tying, stream etiquette and how to “read” the water. And, of course, there is fishing. The camp is limited to 32 selected and qualified students between the ages of 14 and 17. Applicants must have been born between June 21, 1995 and June 16, 1999. The 32 students will be selected through an application process where they must state why they want to attend camp and provide a reference from a science teacher or guidance counselor. All applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2013.
